Regular inspections

The Lister Hospital is inspected by the Healthcare Commission to ensure compliance to the National Minimum Standards (PDF) and the Private and Voluntary Healthcare (England) Regulations.

Quality Accreditation

In addition The Lister Hospital is Health Quality Service (HQS) accredited, the highest quality mark awarded to hospitals in the private sector. This has been achieved by ensuring that we offer high standards of clinical care and have the latest diagnostic and treatment facilities available to our physicians.

Quality Indicator Project

Participation in the UK QIP project (PDF) enables The Lister Hospital to continuously improve the quality of care provided to patients. This is achieved by assessing and evaluating data that can be compared anonymously with other private healthcare providers in the UK, ensuring that the hospital continuously strives towards an equal or higher level.

The Quality Indicator Project® began in the United States in 1985 to assist hospitals in identifying opportunities for improvement in patient care. Around 1,000 hospitals now participate in the Project across the USA, Europe and Asia. UK participation began in 1991 and over 80 hospitals currently participate in the Project in the UK and Ireland.

Infection Control

The hospital considers the prevention of hospital-acquired infection of paramount importance for all patients, visitors and staff. A pro-active approach by the Infection Control Team ensures that hospital-acquired infections are kept to a minimum and there are guidelines and policies in place to minimise the possibility of the spread of any infection.

All patients admitted to The Lister Hospital, including day cases, are screened for MRSA by taking a swab from the anterior part of the nose (the commonest site of staphylococcal carriage, including MRSA). Should the patient be an MRSA carrier, the procedure may be deferred pending eradication treatment, or if clinically necessary to proceed, will be nursed in strict isolation ("barrier nursing") to reduce the possibility of transmission to healthcare staff or other patients.

The risk of MRSA transmission is reduced by the use of single patient rooms. Indeed the data shows that the a patient is six times less likely to contract MRSA in an HCA hospital.

Patient Feedback

We aim to provide the highest standards of care and service to our patients, and regard your opinions and comments as extremely valuable as they help us to identify areas of success and opportunities for improvement. The information we receive via our feedback questionnaires is carefully monitored and analysed on a monthly basis.

You can feedback your views about your experiences at The Lister Hospital at any time using our Patient Questionnaire (PDF) or find out how to comment or complain.
